Peter and the miracles

"The sick were brought out into the streets: they were put on little beds and on stretchers, so that when Peter came, at least his shadow passed over one of them. And they were all healed. "Acts 5: 15-16

Peter had followed Jesus from the beginning of his ministry in Galilee. In Cana, he had seen him change water into wine during the first miracle. He had watched the paralytic walk, the blind see, the demoniacs being delivered. He had even witnessed the resurrection of the daughter of Jairus. He had distributed the bread and fish multiplied by Jesus to the point of feeding more than 5,000 people.

He himself had been sent by Jesus with "power and authority over all demons, and the power to heal diseases" (Luke 9: 1). All excited, he had returned to the Master to tell him all he had done.

Later Peter was clothed with "power from on high" (the Holy Spirit who had descended on his friends and on him on the day of Pentecost), and he continued the ministry of his Lord in Jerusalem and in Judaea . And the first of the apostles continued to work miracles, even more spectacular than before: he did not even need to touch the sick: his shadow was enough to heal ! He also raised a woman, the pious Dorcas.

At the end of his life, the apostle writes two letters, his spiritual testament. He summarizes what he considers important to leave to his Christian friends (2 Pet. 1: 12-15). We would expect to find in his writings clear instructions on healings, miracles, exorcisms ... Would not he have been in the best position to give them ? But - surprise ! - we find no exhortation to make spectacular signs, not the slightest verse to encourage to ask for the cure of any disease, not the smallest allusion to the wonders that he himself had made ! On the contrary, Peter speaks much in his letters of patiently endured suffering, endurance in trial ... He exhorts to hope in deliverance, but on the Lord's return ; He recommends good behavior in the very midst of difficulties, whether at work, in the church, in society, in the couple ...

The omnipotence of God remains the same today. But this silence of the letters of Peter should seriously make think all those who insist today on the ministries of healing or deliverance ...
