"If you take the left, I will go to the right ; If you take the right, I will go to the left. "Genesis 13: 9
"No servant can serve two masters ... you can not serve God and wealth." Luke 16 13
We are frequently faced with choices. Sometimes banal, often inevitable. Even when a choice seems to be of no great consequence, let us beware, for this choice may depend on the direction of our whole life. The example of Lot demonstrates this.
Abraham made a bad choice when he went to Egypt to flee the famine in Canaan (Gen. 12: 9-20). Unfortunately, this experience did not benefit Lot !
Back in Canaan, the uncle and nephew are forced to separate because of their flocks too many. Abraham said to Lot : "If you take the left, I will go to the right ; If you take the right, I will go to the left ", that is," Go where you want ". Material prosperity attracted Lot : the plain of the Jordan, the built cities, all resembled Egypt where Abraham and Lot were enriched. As for the totally corrupted moral state of this place, Lot does not take it into account. He chose "the plain of the Jordan, which was watered everywhere ..., like the garden of the Lord." Alas ! He will have to learn that wealth is a trap that can lead to God's removal, to compromises with the world and therefore to sin that leads to the judgment of God.
Very early on, we are confronted with choices of the same nature, which will condition the rest of our lives. For example, we have to work to live. But the choice of a trade should not be made in order to become rich. The example of Lot and the word of Jesus, concerning the impossibility of serving God and riches, show well the dangers of the love of money. It has been said that what is wrong is not to possess terrestrial goods, but to possess it !
"Which direction to take ? Each one will find his answer by praying and reading the Word of God in the situation in which he finds himself. However, never use them as a magic way to solve our problems. They are only useful if we really want to do the will of the Lord.
