"God's mercies are not exhausted ... They are renewed every morning ... Oh, let your faithfulness be great !" Lamentations 3.23

 

While Jeremiah is experiencing difficult times, when he is a prey to anguish and dejection, he declares with confidence how great is the faithfulness of God. It is essential in all circumstances of our lives, and especially in the hour of tribulation and trials, to know and repeat it, how great is the faithfulness of God.

Consider the dimensions of its great fidelity: It is great in time, for it is eternal as itself is eternal. God is as faithful today as he was with Moses, with Abraham, with Nehemiah ... His fidelity to us, who arrived at this crucial time in the history of mankind, is no less than The one he once manifested. The psalmist likes to remind him : "For his goodness for us is great, and his faithfulness endures forever." Psalms 117: 2 His faithfulness endureth for ever.

His fidelity is great in space. David reminds us in these words : "Ô Lord, your goodness reaches up to heaven, your faithfulness to the clouds." Psalms 36: 6 The Psalmist wants to encourage us by reminding us that no point in our space is outside fidelity of God. Whether we are at the bottom of a well like Jeremiah, shut up in the darkest dungeon like Paul and Silas, or be on the highest summit as Moses at Sinai, God's fidelity is there.

His fidelity is great because inexhaustible as his goodness : "They are renewed every morning". Yesterday he was faithful, today he is still faithful, and to-morrow his fidelity will still be our help. Today we can confide in his faithfulness which is such an inexhaustible source is renewed day after day.

This great fidelity is the foundation of his Word : "Thou dost lay down thy precepts on righteousness and on utmost fidelity." Psalms 119.138 His Word is sure, for God is great in fidelity. He says and the thing happens. His Word is a solid anchor, an unshakeable rock. It is his fidelity that guarantees the fulfillment of his Word. His Word is trustworthy because God is faithful. Sometimes his promises are slow to be fulfilled, but let us not forget that God is great in fidelity, and let us remember what he says to the prophet Habakkuk : "... She walks to the end ... If she delays wait for her Will be accomplished, it will certainly be accomplished "Habakuk 2.3

A prayer for today

Thank you Lord for your great fidelity. At the hour of trial, when the tempest is blowing on my life, as it breathed on the life of Jeremiah your servant, I will proclaim your faithfulness and confide in your promises. Amen !
