"Everywhere your faith in God has spread." 1 Thessalonians. 1.8
"Noises" or rumors spread very quickly ; Nothing can stop both good and bad news. What do we mean ?
Here are three cases in Scripture which lead to reflection :
Negative example
- "We hear everywhere that there is fornication among you ... And you are swollen with pride" (1 Cor 5: 1, 2). In the assembly of Corinth there are many conversions, many gifts of the Spirit, the visit of preachers of renown. But what is his reputation ? "We hear everywhere ...". Pride has blinded the Corinthians, and they have not denounced a sin of extreme gravity when the facts are known beyond the limits of the city. Blind self-satisfaction. Let us learn to remain vigilant under the authority of the Lord.
Positive examples
- "You have become models for all those who believe in Macedonia and Achaia. From your place, indeed, the word of the Lord has resounded not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but everywhere your faith in God has spread so much that we do not need to speak of it. " 1 Thessalonians 1, 7, 8). The Christians of Thessalonica wanted to live their faith, their love, their patience.
Their preaching was so powerful that it resounded like a trumpet (this is the meaning of the verb to be heard) throughout the country and beyond the borders. Their commitment was so great for Christ that the apostle has nothing to add.
- In Antioch, "many believed and turned to the Lord. The news came to the ears of the congregation in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas "(Acts 21: 22). There were true Christians in Antioch, the assembly of Jerusalem did not yet know: she decided to send Barnabas, a man with a big heart, so that the communion would be complete between the believers from the nations and those born of Judaism. The choice could not be better ! Let us open our eyes to discover the work of God throughout the world and give it glory.
When one believes in God, one speaks of it ! This is how we participate in the spread of the good news of Christ. It is in Antioch that the disciples of Jesus are for the first time called "Christians" and it is from there that Paul and Barnabas will leave for their first missionary journey through the pagan world.
