"Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things. . . and be killed, and be raised the third day. The leading away, Peter began to rebuke him : Lord, you God forbid, it will not happen to you !" Matthew 16. 21, 22

 
It is surprising to freedom and even the impertinence of the remark of Peter, when Jesus reveals to his disciples that he will be killed, "Lord, you God forbid, it will not happen to you !" this shows how the Lord is near an accessible and Master, with whom it is easy to communicate, even if it sometimes shows severe (Matt. 16. 23).
This episode follows the declaration of Peter : "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (v. 16). But associate the words "Son of the living God" and "death" was a blasphemy to a faithful Jew. That's why Peter could not admit that Christ would die. It does not seem to have noticed the mention of the resurrection of Jesus, as the news of his death shocked him. Like him, we are slow to understand what the Lord says. It requires all the patience and "pedagogy" Master for us to evolve.
The need for Jesus' death was related to the incompatibility of sin with God's holiness. The solution required a perfect victim. This is the teaching of the images presented in the A.T. The strong affirmation of Psalms : "The Lord looked down from heaven upon the son of man ... there is none that doeth good, no, not one" (Ps. 14. 2, 3) helps us understand only God could provide the solution : He became man to give his life in sacrifice. This disturbing thought, we must accept it. During the long months that follow the affirmation of the Lord, Peter the refuse of all its forces. And when he admitted the death of Jesus, he will declare to be ready to accompany until prison and even death (Luke 22. 33) !
What is important above all for the Lord, it is not our misunderstandings nor our blunders - he understands them - but our attachment to his person. Peter, after all, loved the Lord with all his heart.
