The disobedience and its repercussions

"They said to one another, Come, let us make bricks, and burn them with fire, and the brick served them for stone, and the bitumen served them as cement. They said again, Let us go, let us build. a city and a tower whose summit touches the sky, and make us a name, so that we are not scattered on the face of all the earth." Genesis 11.3-4

Here, in this chapter of Genesis, we read that the people living in Schinear wanted to make a name for themselves. The word name, in Hebrew, is shem. Shem means honor and authority. In other words, they said, "Let's do our own honor, let's do our own authority." They did not want to go forward and be fruitful on the earth. They wanted to stay exactly where they were.

"Obedience is blessed but disobedience has repercussions."

God said "I want you to disperse," and they said "No, we do not want it." They said "We want to stay here, and we will build a building, we will build it big and glorious, we will do what we want and forget what God said to Noah."

All knew what the Lord had said to Noah. They had heard about the Ark. They knew there had been a deluge, yet they decided, "We will do what we want." Their plans and their decision to disobey quickly ended when God scattered them and confused their languages. Disobedience has consequences.

A reflection for today

Do not be fooled by those who disobey God. Some people may walk away from God for a time while living in opposition to his plans, but God's directives can not be ignored continuously.

Obedience is blessed, but disobedience has serious consequences. These consequences may take a long time to appear but you can be sure they will arrive ! Disobedience has repercussions !
