The Mockers of Today (1)

"In the last days will come the mockers who will give themselves up, according to their desires, to mockery, and say : Where is the promise of his coming ?" Read 2 Peter 3. 3-6

"At the end of time, there will be mockers walking according to their own lusts of impiety." Jude 18

From the book of Genesis, mockers deride the word of God (Gen. 19:14); The books of Job, Psalms and Proverbs abound in teachings about them. On the other hand, mockers are mentioned only twice in the N.T and each time they are presented as a characteristic "of the last days".

It is in this context that the apostle Peter endeavors to bring out the origin and nature of their sarcastic irony summarized by "Where is the promise of his coming ?" What Peter denounces is particularly serious. The mockers know the work of God with regard to creation and the flood (Psalm 33: 6, Gen. 7: 6-10). There is, however, a deliberate will on their part to ignore these two facts, described precisely in the Word ; They actually want to evade God's sovereignty over creation, elements and humans ; It is irrefutable, yet it is unbearable to them, and they deny it. Distinguished from the false teachers mentioned in the second chapter of this epistle, these mockers are none the less deliberate unbelievers. Their irony is by no means akin to some joke or insignificant trait of mind. It is in fact a real attack on God because these taunts try to instil doubt in the minds of the believers on the formal declarations of the Lord concerning his return and on the apostolic teachings on the same subject. It is to undermine the Christian faith.

Peter's faith was strengthened by the vision of the transfiguration of the Lord (2 Pet. 1: 16-21) ; He knows how to find arguments, not only to destroy these presumptions (a thousand years are like a day for the Lord, 2 Peter 3: 8), but also to hasten the Lord's return by holy conduct and piety Christians (verses 11, 12).

Even today, do not underestimate mockers, they are pernicious. Let us respond rather to them by unwavering faith, piety and testimony to the glory of Jesus who affirms and reiterates : "Behold, I come soon" (Revelation 3:11, 22, 7, 12, 20) and proclaim it !
