The Mockers of Today (2)

But you, beloved, remember the words that were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ ; They would say to you : At the end of time, there will be mockers walking according to their own lusts of impiety. These are those who set themselves apart ; They are natural men, not having the Spirit. "Jude 17-19

The Holy Spirit led the Apostle Peter almost simultaneously, as we saw yesterday, then Jude, the younger brother of the Lord (Matthew 13: 55), to alert many readers to the evil presence of mockers in their assemblies, "Among the faithful" (Jude 4). Both epistles indicate the inherence of this evil "in the last days". This proves that the mockers then represented a considerable danger, just as today.

According to Peter, the incredulity of the mockers is revealed by their provocations. By denying the sovereignty of God's promises, they undermine the foundation of the Christian faith. In contrast, the mockers whom Jude denounces are not limited to insinuations and doubts. Entirely subject to their lusts, they want to be able to devote themselves to their passions without incurring the slightest restriction or the most timid reproach, proving by this that they are not "born again", "not having the Spirit" (John 3: 3-6). These mockers consider themselves free from the limits implied by a life of piety ; They despise faithful believers, ridicule them, thus creating parties within the church, even divisions.

Is not this the problem that many churches face today about morals ? Let us not minimize the deleterious influence exercised by the mockers ! Their behavior is in fact an open and deliberate rebellion against God, braving him outrageously like a "Zimri son of Salu" (Name 25: 1-15).

But the resources to protect themselves from these dangers are as powerful and current as ever, God be blessed! It is a matter of building us together "on our most holy faith, praying by the Holy Spirit" and preserving us "in the love of God" (Jude 20-23). Yet God also reminds us of our duty to the misled. They begin by taking up "those who dispute" and "for others", to tear them "out of the fire" (v.22) that is to say to them and "the power of God to save Whoever believes "and" the Son "who alone can free them (Romans 1: 16, John 8:36).
