The paradox of the cross (2)

"When they came to the place called Skull, they crucified him there ... Jesus said : Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do." Luke 23. 33, 34

This is the first word Jesus utters on the cross. It summarizes the work of the Lord. In asking for the forgiveness of his executioners, he manifests his unconditional love.

"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me ?" (Mark 15:34) : When Jesus asks this question, nature becomes darkened and throws a veil of mystery on this terrible moment : Jesus is not only rejected by his people ; he is now "abandoned" by God, because he takes upon himself the guilt of our disobedience to God. "He was bruised for our iniquities; the punishment of our peace has been upon him ..." (Isa.53, 5).

The hopeful response that Jesus gives to the repentant robber opens the divine presence to all who recognize themselves as sinners : "Today you will be with me in paradise" (Luke 23. 43).

All these words that Jesus pronounces show that he is not an ordinary king. He does not exercise temporary authority over a territory. It does not offer a nation to deliver it from an occupying power. He offers the deliverance of the power of sin, reconciliation with God, an eternity in his presence.

But salvation on the cross is not a reversal of immediate and visible situation ; it is a hope for those who believe. Jesus told the robber, "Today you will be with me in paradise". This brigand is saved but does not escape punishment, the Jewish people remains subject to Rome, the Church will be persecuted.

On the other hand, the victory at the cross manifests the sovereignty of God, it will allow the great plan of God to be fulfilled at the end of time : "Behold, the habitation of God is with men, and he will dwell with them; they will be his people, and God himself will be with them, their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more : there will be no more mourning, no shouting, no sorrow, for the first things are past" (Rev. 21. 3, 4).

The day is coming when the goal for which God has created man will be finally reached : to be in communion with him.

This hope gives meaning to my life and encourages me to stay attached to my Lord in a world where sin is everywhere.
