The power of the Bible

Your word is the truth. John 17.17

In his poem Aux Feuillantines, Victor Hugo recounts his wonder, and that of his brothers, before the Holy Book : "We then opened it wide on our knees, And, from the first word, it seemed so sweet to us..." L he writer ends his short story Claude Gueux with various considerations on justice and the benefits of education. He underlines the failure of the philosophy of the Enlightenment : "Remember that there is a book more philosophical […], more popular […], more eternal than the charter of 1830. It is the Holy Scriptures".

In his plea in favor of Christianity he speaks of "a heavenly future", "eternal happiness", "paradise", "Jesus who knew more than Voltaire." "Give, he writes, to the people who work and who suffer [...], for whom this world is bad, the belief in a better world made for them... So sow the villages of the Gospels. One bible per cabin. Let every book and every field together produce a moral worker."

Victor Hugo did not lead a life without reproach, but it is remarkable that this man of immense knowledge, who had the most extensive vocabulary of all French literature, attributed to the Bible the power to transform every human and all society ! And how true it is ! The Word of God is a power of liberation and of life.

Theophile Hammann
