To who are you arranged to wash the feets ?

"Do for others what you want them to do for you." Luke 6.31

In washing his disciples' feet, Jesus did more than rid them of the dust. It was a deliberate, meaningful act for each of the men in the room - and he is still speaking to us today.

What is even more shocking is that Jesus has washed all feet - even those of Judas. In the days of Jesus, servants were instructed to wash the feet of the guests, because they were walking in sandals and the roads were very dusty. I suppose that these servants were regarded as the humblest of the humble, coming to the lowest rank of domesticity. But John 13: 4 tells us that Jesus "rose from the table, took off his clothes, and took a linen with which he surrounded himself."

Shocking, is not it ? He had to raise more than one hiccup of surprise in the room. But it did not stop Jesus. It is said in verse 5 : "Then he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the linen that was in his belt."

What is even more shocking is that Jesus has washed all feet - even those of Judas. Who are you willing to wash your feet ? Many of us are willing to do it for some, but not for others.

During a conference in Texas, I asked three people to join me on the platform to wash my feet. One of them was a well-known conductor of praise. It was not really hard for me to wash her feet. After all, he is a friendly man and most people would jump on the opportunity to spend time with him. And it's easy to do certain things for the people we're trying to impress. But God wants us to treat everyone in the same way.

The second person was someone I did not know and I probably will not see again. Faced with this kind of people, we tend to think, "Why should I get involved ? He surely has friends or family who can help him." Now we must be very careful not to ignore the strangers that God places on our path.

There was a third category of persons whom I felt I should speak : the family. So I also washed my husband's feet. I wanted to show that if we were willing to engage in ministry in the church, we should be equally willing to serve our family behind closed doors.

So many couples go adrift because people get married with the idea that their spouse will make their lives better. But God wants us to approach each of our relationships by asking ourselves what we can bring to the other.

Jesus said : "Do for others what you want them to do for you" (Luke 6:31). I think we can produce change in our little corner of the world if we are willing to take the first steps.

In John 13, when Jesus had finished washing his disciples' feet, he said to them, "If I have washed your feet, I, the Lord and the Master, you also ought to wash your feet one to another ; For I have given you an example that ye also may do as I have done unto you "(John 13: 14-15).

What we often find it hard to understand is that if we do what is in our power to meet the needs of others, we will be blessed and happy.

An action for today

I encourage you today to leave your comfort zone and to be creative. Try to find ways to help the different categories of people that God places in your life.
