"Which of you, by the care he gives himself, can add a cubit to his height ? And why are you worried about clothing ? Study the lilies of the fields, how they grow : they do not work or spin ; but I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of them." Matthew 6. 27-29
On several occasions, the Lord asked his disciples questions to make them think. That day, sitting on a mountain, he asks them : "Why are you worried ?" Today someone will say : "Be concerned, me ? No, worries do not help, God knows everything and I trust him !" Another, on the contrary, will notice : "How can I not be worried if my child is sick, if I am unemployed, if tensions arise in my local assembly ... ?"
Let's put the Lord's question in context. He just told his disciples that their heart can not be shared : "You can not serve God and riches." In other words, the search worries about our sustenance as the possession of wealth prevents us from being whole to God.
The Lord himself answers his question by giving his disciples three reasons for trust :
1. Since life is more than the food that maintains it, the body more than the garment that covers it, God who gave life and wants to preserve it, will not it give the necessary ?
2. Watch the sparrows that God feeds, the lilies of the fields that God clothes. God cares for nature and this God is your Father !
3. The concern will not change anything that God has set for you ; no one, by his anxieties, can add a cubit to his height or an hour to his life. God, in his wisdom, has determined its measure (Ps 39: 5).
So, needless to be worried that God is ignoring the problem, worrying about it, thinking that we are responsible for finding a solution. Let's trust God ! Where faith stops, anxiety moves forward! David had understood : "In the day when I fear," he said, "I will trust in you" (Ps 56: 3).
