5 ways to be humble according to the Bible
Recognize your sinful state before a holy God. Isaiah, the Old Testament prophet, a man called by God, but so aware of his sin in the presence of a Holy Almighty God sets us an example of humility. The key is to move forward in what God has called us to do while maintaining an awareness of his holiness and power. He tells the ocean how far he can go. He paints the sky twice a day. It fills our lungs with air and makes our hearts beat faster. He alone can do that. We are the recipients of its power.
Obedience plays a role in our path to becoming humble. It teaches us that we don't always know everything, but when we listen to it, we learn from it. Sometimes it prompts us to give up a habit and we resist. But when we lean on his grace and say “yes”, we grow in our faith. He works in us while we depend on him to accomplish this “yes”.
Prayer is a powerful way to become more humble. 2 Chronicles 7:14 tells us how to become more humble through prayer opens the door to God who works on our behalf. We can pray throughout the day or have a specific time to pray. One way to truly bring humility to our hearts is to bow down, kneel or lie face down and pray. By lowering our physical body, our heart empties itself and puts aside our desire for personal glory.
Gentleness towards others is another way to become more humble. In our lifetime, we will sometimes be annoyed with others. At such times, we can remember that God created them on purpose for a purpose just as he created you and me. When we live humbly, with awareness of our own weaknesses, we are able to be gentle with others in their weaknesses.
Letting go of our need for prestige is another way to become more humble before the Lord. Being the first or the best is often a motivation. We are trying to climb to the top. We put people on pedestals because they are beautiful, famous or have been through a tragic event. In doing this, we whisper to each other that we are not worthy of sharing our stories because we have no "position." But God teaches us not to focus on our status and just follow it.
