    Adam, Eve and us

"God knows that the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil." Genesis 3.5

What really happened in this Garden of Eden ? Whether we take the reported events literally or differently, the exile imposed on Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:23-24) teaches us the same truths. This is the story of a breach of trust. Of a humanity that begins to doubt its Creator because it is dangled with greatness and autonomy. It is the story of a dream life which blossomed under the benevolent gaze of the God of men, and which is sacrificed to the desire to be "caliph in place of the caliph". "You will be like gods" is the proposition that tilts our ancestors into the hell of a life without a Father. And our Bloody History reminds us of the price of this desire for independence...

But if the path to the Garden of Eden is now closed, the one that leads to the Garden of Gethsemane remains open ! It is in this garden that we begin to understand how much God, through Christ, is our ally. In Gethsemane, (Mark 14.36) as a prelude to the cross, he proves his determination to extend his hand to us again and accepts to suffer in our place. How can we still doubt his attachment to our good ?

God is not our enemy. He wants our good, even if it means taking on himself the penalties we deserve...
