• Be grateful

"May the peace of Christ, to which you have been called in one body, preside in your hearts ; and be thankful." Colossians 3. 15

Experiencing a feeling that encourages one to remember a benefit received, gratitude. This is the dictionary definition given to the expression "to have gratitude to a benefactor".

The child of God has passed from death to life, eternal life; should not he be constantly in gratitude to his Savior ? In fact, one could say that, in a certain sense, recognition opens the door of God's presence. When we express our gratitude, we are in direct contact with him, in conversation with him. Especially on Sunday, we express our gratitude by coming into the presence of the one who has redeemed us : "Enter in his gates with thanksgiving, in his courts with praise. Celebrate him, bless his name !" (Ps 100. 4). It is a special moment when the gathered church expresses its gratitude in praise and adoration, being assembled to pay homage to the Father and the Son.

But this recognition must not be expressed one day a week and be quiet for the next six days! Let us be grateful each day for the way that Christ has allowed us to travel. Let us be so for all things that are given to us day by day. Nothing is due to us, all is grace from God. We easily recognize the unusual things that God gives us, but we leave a little in the shade those who come back regularly. David was aware of this : "My soul, bless the LORD, and forget not all his benefits" (Ps 103: 2).

Recognition is based on closeness to God. When our expressions of gratitude seem to remain "stuck through our throat" and have difficulties to formulate, check if we do not have a problem of proximity ! On the other hand, if they flow unhindered from our hearts and lips, we are close to God. Let's try to count how many times a day we can thank God ; this will make us aware of the many blessings we enjoy ; moreover, it will dampen the impact of the tests that could beset us.

"In all things, give thanks, for such is the will of God toward you" (1 Thessalonians 5: 17, 18).
