"We hear them speak in our tongues the magnificent things of God." Acts 2: 11

The Lord Jesus ascended into heaven after saying to his apostles : "You will receive power, the Holy Spirit coming upon you; And ye shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and unto the end of the earth" (Acts 1: 8). Ten days after these words, on the day of Pentecost, this promise began to be fulfilled. That day all the disciples, gathered in one place, are filled with the Holy Spirit. The many pilgrims who came to Jerusalem for the feast hear them announce in their own tongues the great things that God has accomplished. They do not come back ! When they are upset, they say to each other : "What does that mean ?" (Acts 2:12).

At the time of the arrest of the Lord Jesus, all the disciples had fled and the one who had stayed the longest, Peter, had even three times denied his Lord. On the evening of the resurrection, they are there, crushed, barricaded in the upper room, for their Lord has been crucified.

On the day of Pentecost, the Lord Jesus is no longer in the midst of them as on the preceding days when he taught them ; Yet the twelve stand before those who have rejected their Master. Peter, transformed, speaks loudly and without fear to the crowd assembled.

These same men, who have condemned the Lord Jesus, listen to him without saying a word. Filled with the Holy Spirit like the other disciples, Peter declares that Jesus was risen, that he was exalted, that "God made Jesus and Jesus Christ crucified" (Acts 2:36). The hearers are deeply touched by the Spirit (John 16: 8-13); They do not reject these words but ask : "Brothers, what should we do ?" (Acts 2: 3741). Then Peter led them firmly to repentance and baptism.

Yes, on the day of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit changed everything, both in the disciples and among their hearers:

    - The disciples, with power, open the period of the ministry of the Holy Spirit by announcing magnificent things.

On that day three thousand persons are added to the nascent Church.

It has not stopped growing until now and its members continue to announce "the magnificent things of God" throughout the world.
