"I am amassed of silver and gold, and the treasures of kings and provinces ... and behold, all was vanity and pursuit of the wind, and there was no profit in the sun." Ecclesiastes 2. 8-11

Beginning in 2016, a survey on inequality in the world appears. The figures are staggering : at the world level 1% of the inhabitants would have as much wealth as the remaining 99% of humans, who, of course, are not all poor ! This survey does, however, lead to a first reflection on the poor : how can there be so many poor people in some countries ? The second reflection concerns the rich : what can they do with so much wealth, if not continue to multiply them ?
King Solomon, author of the verse of the day, was extremely rich, presumably the richest of his time. He, who has been able to afford everything, finds it a little late that riches are fleeting and transient, that they fail to satisfy the desires of the heart : all is vanity and pursuit of the wind.
Jesus warned his contemporaries : "Someone may be in abundance, but his life does not depend on his possessions" (Luke 12:15). He told them the parable of a man who, not knowing where to harvest all his crops, decided one day to destroy all his granaries and build larger ones. He would then rest and quietly enjoy life. But he died the following night (Luke 12: 16-20), thus forsaking all his riches !
Fouling the greedy and avaricious rich, James warned them : "Your riches are rotten, and your garments are eaten away by worms" (Jacob 5: 2, 3). They had so jealously guarded these things that they had become unusable. Used on time, they could have fed the hungry and clothed the miserable !
If material wealth is given to believers, they are strongly urged to make use of it for the glory of God and for the good of his fellow men. (1 Tim.6: 17-19). But every believer, without exception, has access to the true goods, that is to say, to the spiritual riches in Christ which he places at our disposal. These blessings are already ours (Eph. 1: 3). We will benefit more by sharing them with others.
