O LORD my God... therefore grant thy servant a heart that is fit to hear. 1 Kings 3.7,9

The Lord came and stood by him and called as at other times : Samuel ! Samuel ! Samuel answered, Speak, for your servant is listening. 1 Samuel 3.10

    To listen

Ah ! I was distracted and just missed the exit of the expressway... And the next one is in several kilometers. My first reaction is to rail against me and against the signs that did not clearly indicate the direction. Afterwards, I reflect : "It is also God who allowed this, does he not want to show me something else ?"

At the next exit, a hitchhiker waits. I invite him to get into my car. The conversation begins, I tell him why I am on his way, it is the occasion to speak about the greatness of God and the weakness of the man. God had it all planned. Without this setback I would not have met this young man.

Receiving everything from the hand of God encourages the believer. Big or small annoyance, serious or mild illness, intense or more fleeting joy, God in his love has planned them for me. He loves me, he wants my good. "We know that everything contributes to the good of those who love God" (Romans 8:28). It is a certainty to be firmly grasped because it is based on the grace of God.

So let's learn not to be upset if God changes or thwarts our plans. He himself knows the reasons. Let us be attentive to him, submissive and available to simply do what he places in front of us.

This confident disposition to hear what God tells us is also useful for all the choices in our life. It was that of young Samuel (verse above).
