"... Jesus said to them: Take courage! it is I, fear not! Peter answered him, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. He said, Come. Then Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But seeing the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me "Matthew 14. 27-30!


Pierre follows his Master. He discerns in him the "Lord" after the miraculous catch that so impressed. Might it not make other experiences with him? In fact, he learned many other lessons.
The Lord has just been informed of the violent death of John the Baptist. He withdrew "boat into a desert place apart" (Matt. 14. 13).
When the crowds realized that Jesus leaves the country, they follow him. His compassion for these people led him to take care of them and multiplies their breads. Then he forced his disciples back across the lake and withdrew to pray. He joined the late night walking on the stormy waters. When he approaches, they are scared and think they see a ghost. "But immediately Jesus spoke to them and told them: Courage! it is I, fear not. " Peter reacted first. He wants to verify that it is the Lord, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to you on the waters." Obviously the water does not, the sea is calm or stormy! The Lord's command is enough to Pierre and he walks on water.
But Peter leaves Jesus gaze and thought, it begins to sink in water. Walk as Jesus can not be done by constantly watching him. This is the lesson learns Pierre; he will need, and we after him, often relearn. Jesus shows us the way by frequently withdrawing to pray.
Like Peter, we often plunge into our problems and expect a miracle. Jesus does not work miracles to satisfy our curiosity or solve our problems. He answers our prayers, but not always in the expected form or at the desired time. In adverse circumstances that can last, the Lord will we make spiritual progress and answer our faith if we stay close to him.
