"We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness is as filthy rags" (Isaiah 64.6).

 

The prophet Isaiah has no complacency with "believers" of his time, who take advantage of their works, their religious practice. He says emphatically that all these works of righteousness which they rely, are like filthy rags.
At all times men sought to reach God through their own efforts, their good works, their merits. This is when God says, "All this is useless, it is only a contaminated clothing. "Imagine that you wanted take you in a magnificent dress with hands full of grease, you see the result ? This is what God says. Seek to justify himself, is like trying to clean a wound with hands full of mud. In all his epistles, the apostle Paul will remind that any justification of research out of the work of the cross can only lead to condemnation.

Self-righteousness is one of the usual means by which men seek to justify. They think they can escape conviction by relying on their own justice. It is proposed that all religions. For Christians the temptation to take this path exists. Thus our own righteousness can rest on our works, our merits, the practice of ritual observations on the law, our biblical knowledge, our conscience ... In the early chapters of Romans, Paul will demonstrate that all these bases, to establish our own righteousness, are ineffective. He concluded : "There is no one righteous, not even one" (Romans 3:10). He added: "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).

Paul cited the examples of Abraham and David, who were justified not because of their works, their conscience, not because of their merit, their deep knowledge of God but, as he stated to David, who having transgressed the law on several occasions has had his salvation by faith in the grace of God, following his repentance.
Self-righteousness comes to despise the price paid by Jesus on the cross. However, our justification, our salvation found only in the merits of Jesus' sacrifice.

A tip for today :

Strip yourselves therefore to your own works, your own righteousness, and put on righteousness that Christ offers for free, and by His grace.
