"Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice ! "(Psalm 50.5)
Through the psalmist Asaph, God sends a holy convocation to those who are faithful to him. He wants to collect them ! Yet God reminds what is the reason for their gathering : They gather around the sacrifice.
The question everyone should ask is: what is the motivation that drives me to gather myself with other believers ?
One can imagine that some are loyal to gatherings to find their friends, it's a good reason but it is not the main reason.
Others are faithful gatherings by religious duty, especially if the pastor feel guilty when they are absent.
There are some who do not want to upset the pastor, they fear his remonstrances.
Others seek to get noticed in their service, they love to be praised.
I have known who gathered in the hope of finding a soul mate!
The worst reason is when we gather to have grounds to criticize the shortcomings of others or imperfections message ! The list is not exhaustive…
This text psalms remind that loyalty rallies, based on the alliance around the sacrifice. But the sacrifice that brings the faithful is that of Christ. Their loyalty is based on the importance they give to the person of Christ, the Lamb slain for their sins.
It is possible to be faithful gatherings for various reasons already mentioned, but one good and one reason to be faithful gatherings, it is the love we bear to Christ, dead and risen, and we share with those who have done as we covenant with him.
Today it is possible to communicate virtually with the body of Christ, thanks to advances in technology. Internet is a wonderful tool that allows sick, the infirm and isolated, and even to those who were injured, to find out a way to come together. However, this plea can not fully replace the concrete need for communion. The faithful love needs communion, relationship and contact.
A question for today :
Since when do you are you not gather with other believers to fellowship around the sacrifice of Christ ? If it's been, it might be time you hear the Lord's call to gather with those who, like you, like Christ for the greatness of his sacrifice. If it's guilt that drives you to collect, wait again, the only force to push you to the rallies is the love you have for Christ for His perfect sacrifice.
