"He that drinketh of the water which I will give unto him shall not thirst for evermore ; But the water that I shall give him shall be in him a fountain of water gushing forth into eternal life. The woman said to him, "Lord, give me this water, that I may not be thirsty, nor come here to draw. Jesus said to him, "Go, call your husband and come here." John 4: 14-16
Under the midday sun, a woman goes to the well of Sichar to seek her water. She leaves at this hour of day because she wants to meet no one, no doubt because of her dubious reputation. She sees a man sitting on the curb of the well. To her dress, she recognizes that he is a Jew. Hence his astonishment, for it is rare to meet Jews at Sichar, so profound is their contempt for the Samaritans. And this man asks her to drink a Samaritan woman! The conversation begins. He speaks to him of "living water" which he gives, a water that definitively quenches thirst. If that could save her the water chore ... she thinks ! "Lord, give me this water ...", she said.
The response of Jesus is surprising : "Go, call your husband and come here" (John 4:16). How could she ? Would Jesus know everything about his chaotic life ? Yes ! He knows the five husbands she has had and the man she is currently living with ! Impressed and admiring, she said, "Lord, I see that you are a prophet." But Jesus wants to lead him to recognize that he is more than a prophet, he is the Messiah who came to earth to meet the spiritual needs of the human being. When the Samaritan woman said to her : "I know that the Messiah who is called the Christ comes; When he comes, he will make us know everything, "then Jesus reveals his identity :" I am he who speaks to you "(v.26).
Henceforth her behavior changes completely, for she believes. She was afraid of the look of her fellow citizens, now she is now going to meet them to tell them of him who revealed her misery with grace without repelling her : "Come and see a man who told me everything 'have done ; Is not this the Christ ? "That is to say how Jesus knew how to find the way of his conscience in order to touch his heart and transform his life.
Let us live near the Lord so that, in perhaps unexpected encounters, we know how to make known the one who gives the water of life.
