Soif du Dieu vivant !

À celui qui à soif, je donnerai à boire gratuitement de la source de l'eau de la vie. Apocalypse 21.6

Cet été, la chaleur est accablante. J’ai donc placé dans mon jardin une coupelle remplie d’eau pour les oiseaux du ciel. Installée à l’ombre d’un noyer centenaire, j’observe le ballet de mésanges et de moineaux venant se désaltérer. Devant cette scène champêtre, je songe à l’eau de la vie divine qui comble les cœurs assoiffés d’amour, de justice et de vérité.

Quel cri salutaire lance le psalmiste : Mon âme a soif de Dieu, du Dieu vivant. (Psaume 42.3)

À cet appel sincère, Dieu répond : Vous tous qui avez soif, venez vers l'eau, même celui qui n'a pas d'argent ! Venez, achetez et mangez, venez, acheter du vin et du lait sans argent, sans rien payer ! (Ésaïe 55.1).

Désaltérée, l’âme en recherche est satisfaite : Celui qui boira de l’eau que je lui donnerai n’aura plus jamais soif (Jean 4.14).

Si Dieu prend soin de donner de l’eau aux oiseaux, combien plus le fera-t-il pour nous ! Demandons-lui de susciter en nous le désir de vivre une relation intime avec lui : « Seigneur, crée en moi la soif du Dieu vivant afin que je connaisse la joie de m’abreuver à la source de la vie éternelle ».

To believe or not to believe ?

But these were written so that you would believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God and that by believing you would have life in his name. John 20:31

We are used to distinguishing between those who believe in God and those who do not believe in God... It is also necessary to clarify what "to believe" means. We can believe in a supreme divine being, but distant, or in a god that we forged in his own way... And for those who say they do not believe, in fact they express a belief, that God does not exist. However, they are obliged to recognize that they believe anyway, whether it is in fate, or chance, or in man, or in Mother Nature, or in themselves...

However, not all beliefs are created equal because they do not have the same impact in our lives. Believing that the universe is ruled by blind chance doesn't help me in my daily life. But believing that this Universe is the work of an almighty God who cares about each of us changes my outlook on life. Because I believe that God showed his love by offering his Son Jesus Christ on the Cross to bear the weight of my faults, so I have the assurance that he has reconciled me to him and that he is doing me her child. Because I believe that Jesus is truly risen, so I am convinced of his loving presence and influence in my life. To believe or not to believe in Jesus, the Son of God, that makes all the difference !

Croire ou ne pas croire ?

Mais ceux-ci ont été écrites afin que vous croyez que Jésus est le Messie, le Fils de Dieu et qu'en croyant vous ayez la vie en son nom. Jean 20.31

On a l’habitude de faire la distinction entre ceux qui croient en Dieu et ceux qui n’y croient pas… Encore faut-il préciser ce que veut dire « croire ». On peut croire en un être divin suprême, mais lointain, ou en un dieu que l’on a forgé à sa façon… Et pour ceux qui affirment ne pas croire, en fait ils expriment bien une croyance, celle que Dieu n’existe pas. Pour autant, ils sont bien obligés de reconnaître qu’ils croient quand même, que ce soit au destin, ou au hasard, ou en l’homme, ou en mère Nature, ou en eux-mêmes…

Cependant, toutes les croyances ne se valent pas, car elles n’ont pas le même impact dans notre vie. Croire que l’Univers est régi par un hasard aveugle ne m’est d’aucun secours dans mon quotidien. Mais croire que cet Univers est l’œuvre d’un Dieu tout-puissant qui se soucie de chacun de nous, voilà qui change mon regard sur la vie. Parce que je crois que Dieu a manifesté son amour en offrant son Fils Jésus-Christ sur la Croix pour porter le poids de mes fautes, alors j’ai l’assurance qu’il m’a réconcilié avec lui et qu’il fait de moi son enfant. Parce que je crois que Jésus est réellement ressuscité, alors j’ai la conviction de sa présence aimante et de son influence dans ma vie. Croire ou ne pas croire en Jésus, le Fils de Dieu, cela fait toute la différence !

The friendship of Jesus

As David finished speaking to Saul, Jonathan became attached to him. Jonathan loved David as himself. 1 Samuel 18.1

The genuine friendship between David and Jonathan is a beautiful example of the friendship Jesus offers to every believer.

The victory of the young shepherd of Bethlehem over Goliath (1 Samuel 17) forged the beginnings of this magnificent relationship between the son of Isaiah and that of the king of Israel, Saul. Despite the social divide between them, the Crown Prince is not ashamed to commit himself in this way to one who will nevertheless be a rival for the succession to the throne. His friendship for David was born because he saw in him the one chosen by God and victorious by his help.

We can thus be drawn to Christ, Son of David, for his victory over a giant : the sin that reigns in the human heart and from which Jesus delivered us by his victory on the cross. Or because of what we are told of the love of Christ, Prince of our salvation, for all his subjects : He is not ashamed to call them brothers (Hebrews 2:10-11). The Son of God did not hesitate to leave his heaven of glory to join us. He was embodied in our reality and walked among men. He chose poorly educated men as his first disciples, and they became attached to him.

Like them, let us be attached to Jesus ! Is he not the one who says : There is no greater love than to lay down your life for your friends (John 15:13) ?

The whole other

The blessed and only sovereign, the King of kings and the Lord of lords, will reveal it when the time is right. He is the only one to possess immortality, he who dwells in an inaccessible light and whom no man has seen nor can see. 1 Timothy 6: 15-16

Unlike most so-called sacred books, the Bible presents a God who is nothing like his creatures. God is the Whole Other, the only immortal, invisible... Phew ! We could not be satisfied with a God who would be on our scale ! It would be an idol, nothing more.

Only, what can we do with an inaccessible God ?... so great, we so little ; so holy, we so soiled, so unique, we so dependent ?

The Good News - the Gospel - is that the Whole Other made himself the Whole Alike. It is an incomprehensible truth, but it is the very key to the salvation of men. In order to "be seen" by us, the Invisible, the Unknowable, became man in Jesus, so that all the disciples could, like John, have written : What we heard, saw with our eyes, contemplated and that our hands have touched […] we announce it to you. Indeed, he who is the Word became man and he lived among us. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself. (1 John 1.1,3 ; John 1.14 ; 2 Corinthians 5.19)

Jesus was God revealing Himself to us and it is the Scriptures - the Bible - that bear witness of Jesus. (John 5.39) There only, we can meet the Whole Other and let ourselves be found by Him.

Le tout autre

Le bienheureux et seul souverain, le Roi des rois et le Seigneur des seigneurs, la révélera au moment voulu. Il est le seul à posséder l'immortalité, lui qui habite une lumière inaccessible et qu'aucun homme n'a vu ni ne peut voir. 1 Timothée 6.15-16

Contrairement à la plupart des livres dits sacrés, la Bible présente un Dieu qui ne ressemble en rien à ses créatures. Dieu est le Tout Autre, seul immortel, invisible… Ouf ! Nous ne pourrions nous satisfaire d’un Dieu qui serait à notre échelle ! Ce serait une idole, rien de plus.

Seulement, que pouvons-nous faire d’un Dieu inaccessible ?… si grand, nous si petits ; si saint, nous si souillés, si unique, nous si dépendants ?

La Bonne Nouvelle – l’Évangile –, c’est que le Tout Autre s’est fait le Tout Semblable. C’est une vérité incompréhensible, mais c’est la clé même du salut des hommes. Pour se « faire voir » de nous, l’Invisible, l’Inconnaissable, s’est fait homme en Jésus, de sorte que tous les disciples auraient pu, à l’instar de Jean, écrire : Ce que nous avons entendu, vu de nos yeux, contemplé et que nos mains ont touché […] nous vous l’annonçons. En effet, celui qui est la Parole est devenu homme et il a vécu parmi nous. Car Dieu était en Christ, réconciliant le monde avec lui-même. (1 Jean 1.1,3 ; Jean 1.14 ; 2 Corinthiens 5.19)

Jésus était Dieu se révélant à nous et ce sont les Écritures – la Bible – qui rendent témoignage de Jésus. (Jean 5.39) Là seulement, nous pouvons rencontrer le Tout Autre et nous laisser trouver par Lui.

Vanity of vanities

Vanity of vanities, says Ecclesiastes, vanity of vanities, all is vanity. Ecclesiastes 1.2

Ecclesiastes shows us that nothing that we see in the world is solid. He advises us not to passionately seek out the things that are perishing. These expressions in the Bible : "a passing cloud", "a little smoke", "a vapor" (Job 7.9 ; Psalm 102.4 ; James 4.14), make us aware of the fragility of our life. There is nothing that lasts forever. When we look at the elements of the world and reflect on their short duration, we cannot help saying : "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity." All these regular movements of nature and all our daily pains are a continual reminder that we are getting older and that our life is heading towards its end and its rest.

Let us not be fools who prefer the shine of present and passing goods to the eternal life that Jesus promises to those who believe in him. See, even the brightest stars in the sky vanish at sunrise.

The same thing happens with the things of the world when we look at the gospel of Christ. The book of Ecclesiastes prompts us to look to our Creator before our days become dark... It is only the goods of God that endure forever. Now Jesus, whom God sent to save us, has the words of eternal life (John 6:68) !

Vanité des vanités

Vanité des vanités, dit l’Ecclésiaste, vanité des vanités, tout est vanité. Ecclésiaste 1.2

L’Ecclésiaste nous montre que rien de ce qu’on voit dans le monde n’a de solidité. Il nous conseille de ne pas rechercher passionnément les biens qui périssent. Ces expressions dans la Bible : « une nuée qui passe », « un peu de fumée », « une vapeur » (Job 7.9 ; Psaume 102.4 ; Jacques 4.14), nous font connaître la fragilité de notre vie. Il n’y a rien qui dure toujours. Quand nous regardons les éléments du monde en faisant réflexion sur leur peu de durée, nous ne pouvons pas nous empêcher de dire : « Vanité des vanités, tout est vanité. » Tous ces mouvements réguliers de la nature et toutes nos peines journalières nous rappellent continuellement que nous vieillissons et que notre vie se dirige vers son terme et son repos.

Ne soyons pas des insensés qui préfèrent l’éclat des biens présents et passagers à la vie éternelle que Jésus promet à ceux qui croient en lui. Voyez, mêmes les étoiles les plus brillantes dans le ciel s’évanouissent au lever du soleil.

La même chose arrive aux choses du monde quand nous regardons à l’Évangile du Christ. Le livre de l’Ecclésiaste nous incite à regarder vers notre créateur avant que s’obscurcissent nos jours… Il n’y a que les biens de Dieu qui durent éternellement. Or Jésus, que Dieu a envoyé pour nous sauver, a les paroles de la vie éternelle (Jean 6.68) !

"YouVersion Bible"

Several hundred million people around the world have downloaded it and can access Sacred Scripture at any time. In 2018, 409 million verses were shared on social media. And among that multitude, one of them has been named "the most popular verse of the year." This is the one at the top of this leaflet.

The popularity of this verse from the book of Isaiah is certainly related to the concerns and fears felt by our contemporaries. This is also the case with the French, since this verse is also the most popular in France. People all over the world are looking for comfort, encouragement and hope. By connecting to the Word of God, they can receive answers to their questions and solutions to their distress. In his Word, God sends us a message of love and reconciliation. It reveals to us the deep needs of our heart and how to find meaning in our life in it. If we are attached to him, then he will guide us and keep us.
